WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is derived from the Japanese terms "rei," which means universal, and "ki," which means life force energy.
Created by Mikao Usui, reiki is a calming Japanese energy healing technique that allows your body to go into a deep relaxation state and promotes healing mentally, physically, and spiritually by aligning with your life force energy.

It is meant to deepen your connection to yourself and can help you balance anxiety and stress.

Reiki is a gentle way to help you reconnect with your inner self and manage your stress and anxiety. It's a way to heal yourself of stress, anxiety, traumatic experiences, and more.

What happens in a Reiki session?
During the reiki session, you will remain fully clothed and lie on a treatment table. You might be on your back for the entire session, or the practitioner may ask you to lie on your stomach at some point. If you have any physical limitations, such as being pregnant or unable to lie flat, inform the practitioner in advance so they may provide accommodations.
When you feel at ease, you can choose to sit or lie down on a massage table. The practitioner will then place their hands on or just above your body in a series of specific positions. They will hold their hands in each position for several minutes, allowing the Reiki energy to flow through your body.
During a Reiki session, you could experience a range of feelings, including heat, tingling, or pulsing. A feeling of well-being, tranquility, or relaxation could also come over you. Some folks even doze off in the middle of a Reiki treatment.
There is no such defined way to experience Reiki. The most important thing is to relax and allow the Reiki energy to work its magic.
The practitioner may talk with you about your experience and address any questions you have after the session. You might feel calm and revived or you might sense something different. It's crucial to pay attention to your body's signals and let it heal on its own schedule.

How Does Reiki Work?
The practice of Reiki involves a practitioner using their hands to transfer this universal life energy to a recipient. Here's a general outline of how Reiki is thought to work:
Energy Channels
According to Reiki practitioners, the human body has a network of energy channels through which life energy (ki or chi) flows. These channels are like a system of invisible pathways that transport energy to various parts of the body.
Blockages and Imbalances
Illness, stress, negative emotions, and other factors are believed to create blockages or imbalances in the flow of energy. These blockages can disrupt the self healing capability of one's body.
Energy Transfer
During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands gently on or slightly above specific areas of the recipient's body. The practitioner guides the universal life energy through their hands and into the body of the person receiving it.
Balancing Energy
Vibrations in the affected areas are said to be increased by the transferred energy, which aids in relaxation and clears blockages. This process is believed to restore the body’s natural healing capabilities by restoring balance in the body.
Healing and Rebalancing
It is thought that as the energy passes through the recipient, it balances and heals on all levels—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—by treating the underlying causes of the problems and fostering peace and harmony.
It is essential to note that the scientific basis for Reiki is not well-established, and the mechanisms behind it remain largely unexplained from a conventional medical standpoint. While some people believe that Reiki is a form of alternative medicine that promotes relaxation and peace of mind, it is not a replacement for medical care or healthcare professionals.
What to expect from your first Reiki Session
The first Reiki session typically lasts for about 60 to 90 minutes, but the duration may vary depending on the practitioner. It's recommended to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and prepare for the session.
The practitioner may work with their hands either on or slightly above your body, except for areas like genitals or women's breasts (unless specifically requested by someone with breast cancer). The primary goal of the session is relaxation, so there won't be much talking, allowing you to focus on the experience. However, if you ever feel uncomfortable during the session, don't hesitate to inform the practitioner. Your comfort is essential.
As the practitioner works, you might feel a warm, pulsing energy emanating from their hands. These sensations are normal and signify that the Reiki energy is flowing effectively.
The purpose of Reiki is to promote profound relaxation, and it is not uncommon for clients to experience profound relaxation or even drift off to sleep during the session.

Afterward, the practitioner will gently wake you, and you should feel relaxed and serene. Take your time getting off the table and sit for a few minutes while sipping water, allowing the state of relaxation to linger.
It's advisable to head home and continue relaxing after your Reiki session. If that's not possible, try to avoid stressful activities or tasks. Consider taking a break or engaging in a non-stressful activity before returning to your usual routine. For example, if you have to go back to work, you could stop and have a peaceful lunch on your way. The idea is to maintain the sense of calm and tranquillity with you after the session.
